Status of the sensors
Every time the control character ASCII
ENQ
(code 5) is processed, the printer will send a
status communication which is made up by the capital letter "
S
" followed by 5 consecu-
tive numerical characters and a sequence of
CR/LF
.
This message informs the external device about the possibility of successfully starting a
print session. The significance of the characters is a follows:
S
communication header,
p
status of photo sensor for end paper (
0
=paper present ,
1
=end paper),
r
status of photo sensor for transfer ribbon (
0
=ribbon present ,
1
=end ribbon ),
d
not used ,
c
not used,
f
flag indicating the type of printhead installed
0=
first switch on
A
= 3" printhead
B
= 6" printhead
C
= 2" printhead
2
= 4” printhead
the identification of the printhead (parameter
f
) depends on the value currently pro-

Status of the printer
The control characters ASCII
DC2
(code 12 hex, 18 dec) and
DC4
(code 14 hex, 20 dec)
are sent to the printer every time there is a switch between ONLINE status (even on
switch on) and OFFLINE, indicating whether the printer can or cannot process commands
and characters received from the external computer.
The printer changes between ONLINE and OFFLINE when the operator presses the
Pause
key on the front panel and goes OFFLINE when a non recoverable error arises
during a print session.
If the 14
th
digit of the command
/$&%
is
1,
the printer will send an XOFF and will set it-
self as busy when it is printing or OFF-LINE. In this case
XON
and
XOFF
are sent to-
gether with
DC2
and
DC4
.
The control character ASCII
NAK
(code 15 hex, 21 dec) is sent by the printer every time
the Command Interpreter processes a command which contains an error (wrong character,
parameters out of range, inexistent macro recalled, etc.).
The control character ASCII
SYN
(code 16 hex, 22 dec) is sent by the printer every time
the Command Interpreter process the command of a design where a character, line or
graphic block are partially or totally outside of the bitmap.
