Activity 4 (Symbols and Punctuation Keyed in the Normal Mode)
This is the last activity involving new key reaches. The shift key will be used in several
instances where alternative symbols are available on the same finger with the same motion.
Left Bracket and Right Brackets: The left bracket is keyed with the left pinky finger
pressing east. The right bracket is keyed with the right pinky finger pressing west. Key the
drill line that follows twice. A common use of the bracket is in text that has been quoted
and the writer enters [sic] to note that those were the exact words of the person being
quoted. Concentrate on the motions for keying the two brackets.
[],[],[],[],[sic]. Those are the word [sic] of the people who have tried this product.
Left and Right Braces: The left and right braces are struck with the same fingers and
motions as the left and right brackets except the shift key has to be depressed. Braces are
often times used in legal documents for entering information. Key the line that follows
twice. Concentrate on coordinating the shift feature and entering the appropriate brace.
{},{},{},{}. The hearing is to take place in the county of {__________}, Illinois.
Accent Mark: The accent mark “`” is keyed with the left middle finger by pressing west.
The accent mark is used to identify stress on a syllable in speaking. Key the drill line that
follows twice. Push for speed both times.

Quotation Marks: The quotation marks (“) are keyed with the left index finger by pressing
west. Key the line that follows twice. Concentrate on control. Try to key the second attempt
a little faster.
“1,” “2.” “3”; Steve screamed! “Everyone, and I mean everyone pull !”
Apostrophe: The apostrophe (‘) is keyed by pressing the right index finger east. Key the
line that follows twice without error. If you make an error, start over immediately. You
don't have to key two errorless lines in succession.
