• Exclamation Mark: The exclamation mark (!) is keyed with the left pinky finger moving
north. It is used in text in place of a period to call the reader's attention to the word,
statement, or sentence that preceded it. Key the line that follows at least twice; concentrate
on making a smooth finger motion to activate the key. Then key the second line two times,
concentrate on the motions to shift back and forth between the NAS and Normal Modes.

• Ampersand: The ampersand (&) is keyed with the right index finger moving north and is
used in place of the word “and.” A common use of the ampersand is in company names
such as Elert & Associates. Key the first line twice. Try to increase your speed on the
second attempt. Key the second line twice; concentrate on shifting modes.

• Asterisk: The asterisk (*) is keyed with the right middle finger moving north. In text the
asterisk is used to tell the reader to look at the bottom of the page for more information; in
addition, it is used to replace preceding zeros in financial statements. Also it is used in
computer programming as a symbol for multiplication. Key the first line twice; concentrate
on control. Key the second line twice; concentrate on shifting modes.

• Left and Right Parentheses: The left parenthesis “(“is keyed with the right ring finger
moving north and the right parenthesis “)”is keyed with the right pinky finger moving
north. The parentheses are often times used within text to provide additional information to
assist the reader. Key the first drill line twice; concentrate on the finger motions to enter the
left and right parentheses. Key the second line twice; concentrate on shifting modes
