Single-Wire Smart Card
Indailyuse,single‐wiresmartcardprocessingoperatesjustlikeregularsmart
cardprocessing.Thedifferenceinsingle‐wiresmartcardprocessingisintheuse
ofasingle‐wireconnectionwiththeprinterratherthantwo.Inparticular,the
single‐wiresmartcardprocessingallowsasingleUSBorEthernetconnectionto
carrydataforbothsmartcardpersonalizationandprinting.
Thesingle‐wiresmartcardfeatureisavailabletoanapplicationthroughtheCard
PrinterDriverSoftwareDevelopmentKit(SDK).
Requiredcomponentsforsingle‐wiresmartcardarethesameasforothersmart
cardsystemsexceptasnoted.
Smart Card Processing Requirements
Thefollowingitemsarerequiredtopersonalizesmartcards:
• AdirectlocalconnectionbetweentheprinterandthePC.
• Asmartcardreaderintheprinter.
• Ifneeded,asmartcardcableforthesmartcardportused.Thiscableisnot
neededforsingle‐wireprocessing.
• Acardapplicationthatiscustomizedtoworkwiththeprinterandthesmart
cardapplication(usingtheSDKorcardproductionapplicationwithasmart
cardapplicationmanager).
• Smartcardsthatworkwiththereaderintheprinter.
Settings for Card Design in Printer Manager
ThePrinterManagercontainscarddesignsettingsthatmanagersandservice
providerscanusetosetupcardproduction.Thecarddesignsettingsinclude
magneticstripesetupandsmartcardtesting.ThePrinterManageralsocontains
troubleshootingfeaturessuchasalogfilethatcantrackallprocessesofacard
job.Serviceproviderscanusetheinformationinthelogfiletotroubleshootand
relayinformationwhentroubleshootingcardprocessingissues.Referto“Printer

Thesingle‐wiresmartcardprogramminginterfaceissimilar,butnotidentical,tothe
PC‐SCstandard.ApplicationsusingPC‐SCtopersonalizesmartcardsrequire
modificationtousethesingle‐wiresmartcardinterface.
