Patients Using Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)
TENS signals may saturate the signal and can interfere with, or result in gross distor-
tion, of the ECG waveform. This may result in false asystole or low heart rate alarms.
It also affects the displayed ECG waveform. The following interventions are recom-
mended:
Reposition the leads attempting to adjust their position relative to the TENS
unit. Follow the steps detailed for repositioning the leads for patients with
pacemakers (see “Patients with a Pacemaker” below).
Refer to the operator’s manual that is provide by the manufacturer of the
TENS unit.
If TENS signals continue to interfere with ECG monitoring, and if ECG mon-
itoring is critical to patient care, you may need to make the clinical decision to
discontinue TENS pain management.
