“It can be recycled?”
People often ask this when they learn the facts about foam. The answer is yes. Many are also surprised to learn that
foam products have performance and environmental benefi ts apart from whether the material is recycled.
• A typical foam cup requires about one third
less energy to produce than a similar coated
paper hot cup with a corrugated sleeve.
• All foam foodservice products comprise less
than 1 percent, by both weight and volume, of
landfi ll waste.
• Dart does not use chlorofl uorocarbons
(CFCs) in the production of its foam products.
• Foam products are lightweight, sturdy,
inexpensive, and insulate well.
• Foam is composed of carbon and hydrogen
and can be safely incinerated in modern
waste-to-energy facilities.
• Since modern landfi lls are constructed to
discourage biodegradation, which can
generate methane gas and leachate, the fact
that foam does not biodegrade may be
benefi cial.
