Glossary
Backup. A duplicate copy of your DOT 400 files and the data
stored in your desktop PC, in a CompactFlash card, or in a
safe storage folder.
Battery Charger. An external power supply that converts AC
power from a standard household electrical outlet to the low-
voltage DC power required to operate your DOT 400.
compactFlash. A plug-in memory device for high-
performance memory cards and other peripheral devices such
as modems and NICs.
Cradle. A receptacle used to connect your DOT 400 to a
desktop PC. The cradle may remain connected to your
desktop PC, even when you remove your DOT 400.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). A protocol
that assigns a dynamic IP address to your DOT 400 whenever
you connect to a network.
Dial-up Connection. A connection between your DOT 400
and another computer by modem. You can have a dial-up
connection with an ISP, a network, or with a modem attached
to a PC.
Direct Connection. A connection between your DOT 400 and
another computer by means of the cradle or infrared port.
DNS (Domain Name System). An Internet service that
translates domain names into IP addresses.
Driver. A control program that enables a computer to work
with a specific peripheral device.
