MASQUERADE: IP masquerading allows one or more workstations on a LAN to be concealed behind a single Linux
machine connected to the Internet. The workstations on the LAN can access the Internet almost
transparently even without valid IP addresses. The Linux box rewrites outgoing packets from the
LAN to the Internet in such a way that they appear to originate from the Linux machine. Response
packets coming back in are re-written and routed back to the correct workstations on the LAN.
This arrangement allows many Internet applications to run transparently from the LAN
workstations.
