The VoIP phone adapters, routers and gateways allow homes and businesses to take
advantage of their DSL/cable modem connection to make inexpensive Internet phone
calls. Through broadband connection, these devices allow users to access voice and
fax services over the Internet to significantly reduce the cost of international and long
distance calls.
The VoIP phone adapters and routers are made for homes and small offices, and
typically have one or two phone ports. For large offices, the gateways can have up
to 32 phone ports for a large number of users to make simultaneous Internet phone
calls. The gateways are categorized into two different types: station gateways and
trunk gateways. The station gateways have FXS phone ports that connect to regular
phone sets, Ethernet WAN ports that connect to DSL/cable modems and built-in router
function/Ethernet LAN ports for convenient computer connection. The trunk gateways
are equipped with FXO ports, which can connect to PBX, key telephone systems or
PSTN phone lines for analog voice, and Ethernet LAN ports which connect to office
LAN (IP networks) for VoIP data. The combo gateways provide both FXS and FXO
ports for flexible application.
