Total Protection
The total power load of connected equipment to be protected by an installed
UPS and the expected runtime of the unit are two key factors in determining
what size UPS (in terms of its VA/Watt rating) is best suited to a particular
application. If it is anticipated that additional devices will be connected to the
UPS in the future, thus increasing the power load, this should be considered
as well.
Estimating expected UPS runtimes can be challenging, particularly in areas
where the consistency of the utility power is not well known. Selecting a
UPS with a load capacity 30-35% above the required power load offers the
advantage of longer runtimes, thereby adding what could prove to be an
important margin of safety to an installation’s power protection. While the
initial outlay for a UPS increases with its size, due to the higher capacity
components required, operating costs are typically lower in the long run
because component wear and tear is reduced when the UPS operates below
maximum capacity. The ability to provide longer runtimes is also added
insurance against a potentially lengthy power outages.
In addition to extended runtimes, sizing a UPS to run at loads that are
significantly lower than its capacity also effectively increases battery life,
minimizing the likelihood of battery failure, a leading cause of load loss.
