Chapter 3. Using Your APS3
3.4
Making a Simple Particle Measurement Run
The APS3 device detects particles by size, sending the data to the ParticleSpectrum application
in nearly real time. ParticleSpectrum displays the readings graphically and numerically, showing
particle measurements by particle size. You can place the APS3 device in a piece of equipment,
run the equipment through its paces, and watch the ParticleSpectrum display for particle
measurements that might indicate a problem with the equipment.
To use the APS3 device with ParticleSpectrum:
1. Make sure the computer running the ParticleSpectrum application is within the range of
the link module, up to 30 ft (10 m).
2. Normally, you would place the APS3 device on the equipment you want to check and then
start the equipment in motion, monitoring the ParticleSpectrum display. To get an idea of
how the APS3 system works, for now just set the device on a desk or table and turn it on.
3. Start the ParticleSpectrum application. The ParticleSpectrum window appears, as shown in
Figure 3.3 on page 3.5.
4. Click START to start the measurement run in the Device Controls (see Figure 3.2).
Figure 3.2: Making a Simple Measurement Run
The particle run begins by purging the APS3 device’s particle sensor before starting to detect particles
(for more information, see “Setting the Purge and Measurement Times” on page 3.7.).
