MOWER CONTROLS
Thefollowing informationidentifiesand
describesthe controls for all mower
models,
OperatorPresence ControlBail
The OperatorPresenceControlBail
(A, Figure3-1) must bepulledback
againstthe handlebarand heldthere
while starting the engineandoperating
the unit. Releasingthe bailwill shut off
the engineandstop the mowerblade.
The enginewill not restart unlessthe bail
is pulled backagainstthe handlebar.
NOTE:This control disengagesanengine
brakewhenpulled backagainstthe
handlebarandengagesthe enginebrake
when released.Themowerbladeis
bolteddirectly to the engineshaft,
thereforeit stopswhenthe enginestops.
The enginewill not restart unlessthe bail
is puffedbackagainstthe handlebar.See

Section4 for more information.
Wheel Drive Bail
The WheelDriveBail(C,Figure3-1)
engagesthe poweredrearwheelswhen it
ispulledupagainstthe handlebar,and
disengagesthe wheelswhen released.

To movethe mowerwithout engine
power,releasethe controlsand push or
pull the mower.
NOTE:Thepiniongearsinsidethe rear
wheelsmayproducean occasional
knocking soundwhen pushing or pulling
the mowermanually.This sound is
harmless. Donot lubricatethedrive
wheels.Servicethedriveassemblyonly
as instructedin Section5.
Wheel SpeedControl
TheWheel SpeedControl (B,Figure3-1)
providesthreedifferentwheelspeeds.
Selectionsare:
• 1 for low speed
• 2 for mediumspeed
• 3 for highspeed
SeeMowing in Section4 for moreinfor-
mation.
CuffingHeightAdjustmentLever
Thiscontrol(K, Figure3-1) providessix
cutting heights,enablingyou to choose
the most appropriateheightfor the lawn
condition. Cuttingheightsrangefrom
approximately1-1/4-inchesto 4 inches.

RecoilRopeStart
The recoil ropestart(D,Figure3-1) is
usedto pulFstartthe engine.Seethe

AdjustableHandlebarHeight
The mowerprovidesthreehandlebar
