hazards. When you seethis symbol, readand
obeythe messagethat follows it. Failureto obey
safetymessagescould resultin personalinjury or property

1998, which is sponsored by the Outdoor Power
EquipmentInstitute, inc.,andis publishedby the American
NationalStandardsInstitute.

IMPORTANT
SateOperationPracticesforWalk-BehindMowers
Thiscuttingmachineis capableof amputatinghandsandfeetandthrowingobjects.
Failuretoobservethe followingsafetyinstructionscouldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.
I. GENERALOPERATION
1. Read,understandandfollow all
instructions on the machineand in
the manualsprovidedwith the unit.
Bethoroughly familiar with the
controls andthe properuse of the
mower beforestarting.
2. Do net put hands orfeet nearor
underrotating parts. Keepclearof
the mower bladeanddischarge
openingatalltimes.
3. Onlyallow responsibleindividuals,
who arefamiliar with the instruc-
tions, to operatethe mower.
4. Clearthe areaof objectssuchas
rocks,toys, wire, bones,sticks,etc.,
which could bepickedup andthrown
by the blade.
5. Besurethe areais clearof other
peoplebefore mowing. Stop mowerif
anyoneentersthe area. Keep
bystandersat least25feet awayfrom
the areaof operation.
6. Do not operatethe mowerwhen
barefootorwearingopensandals.
Alwayswearsubstantialfoot wear.
7. Do not pull mowerbackwardsunless
absolutelynecessary.Look down and
behindbeforeandwhilemoving
backwards.

Donot operatemowerwithout all
guardsin placeandeitherthe entire
GrassCatcher,the MulchingPlugor
the Side-DischargeChuteinstalled.
ROTATINGBLADES-- Donot open
dischargeguard while engineis
running.
9. Referto providedinstructionsfor
properoperationandaccessory
installation. Useonly accessories
approvedbyGardenWayInc.
10. Shut off enginewhen crossinggravel
drives, walks,or roads.
11. Stop engineanddisconnectspark
plugwirefrom sparkplugwhenever
you leaveunit,beforecleaningmower
or uncloggingchute.
12. Shut the engineoff andwait until the
bladecomesto a completestep
before installingor removingthe
MulchingPlug,Side-DischargeChute
or the GrassCatcher. Makecertain
that an attachmentis installedbefore
operatingthe mower.Emptythe
GrassCatcherafter eachuse-
decomposingdebris could generate
enoughheatto catchfire.
13. Mow only in daylightor in goodarti-
ficial light.
14. Do not operatemewerwhile under
the influenceofalcohol or drugs.
15. Neveroperatemowerin wet grass.
Alwaysbesure of your footing; keep
afirm holdonthehandleandwalk;
neverrun.
16. BesureWheelDriveBailisdisen-
gagedbefore starting engine.
17. If the unit shouldstart to vibrate
abnormally,stopthe engineanddis-
connectthe sparkplug wire. Then
check immediatelyfor the cause.
Vibrationis generallya warning of
trouble.
18. We recommendthat you wearsafety
gogglesor safetyglasseswhen
operatingthe mower.
19. Watchfor traffic when operating
near,or whencrossing roadways.
20. Neverattemptto carry childrenor
otherpassengersonthe mower.
Theycouldfall off andbeseriously
injured,or they could interferewith
the safeoperationof the mower.
21. Checktheoperationefthe Operator
PresenceControlBail(tep bail,
mountedon handlebar)beforeeach
use.TheOperatorPresenceControl
Bailis a safetydevicethat is designed
to stopthe mowerbladewithinthree
secondsafter releasingthe bail. The
bailmustoperatefreely whenpulled
backagainstthe handlebarand
returnautomaticallyto the disen-
gagedposition when released.Ifthe
enginerunslongerthanthree
secondsafter releasingthe bail,the
system is not working properly.
Immediatelycontactan authorized
servicedealeror the Factory
TechnicalServiceDepartmentfor
instructions.Donot usethe mower
until the mechanismis repaired.
22. Neverrunthe engineinan enclosed
area.Engineexhaustcontainscarbon
monoxide,a deadlygasthat is
odorless,colorlessandtasteless.
Alwaysrunthe engineoutdoorsand
makesure there is adequate
ventilation.
