connectsparkplugwire andmovewireawayfromsparkplug. I
Failuretofollowtheseinstructionscanresultin seriouspersonalinjuryorpropertydamage. I

1. Removethe belt cover, See
Removingthe Belt Coverinthis Section.
2. Pressfirmly downwardon the cable
mounting bracket(A, Figure5-7) untilit
tilts andthe belt slackens.
3. Removebelt (B, Figure5-7) from
transaxlepulley.
4. Tipthe mower onto itsside (towards
the muffler) andpull the beltthrough the
cutout in the housing.
5, Dothis step only if you did not
removethe mowerblade-- otherwise,go
onto step6.
a. Makesure the sparkplug wire is
removedfrom the sparkplug and
movedawayfrom theplug. Rotatethe
bladeso that oneendis somewhere
within the front of the mowerhousing.
h. Workthe belt aroundandover that
endofthe blade(Figure5-8).
c. Rotatethe bladesothat the other
endis somewherewithin the front of
the mower housingandwork the belt
aroundandoff the mower.
d. Work the newbelt aroundandover
the sameendof the blade.
e. Rotatethe bladeso that the other
endof the bladeissomewherewithin
the front areaofthe mowerhousing
andworkthenew belt aroundand over
the sameend.
6. Seatthe newbelt into the groove on
the enginepulleythat islocatedon the
bladedrive shaft.
7. Grasponeendofthe new beltand
insertit in andthrough the cutout inthe
housing.

8. Tip the mowerbackdownto its
normal position.
9. Applyfirm pressureagainstthecable
mounting bracketon the transaxle
assembly(A, Figure5-7) until ittilts
forward,
10. Pullthebelt over the transaxlepulley
andinto thegroove.
11. Releasepressureon the transaxle
bracketslowly. Makesurethat the belt
seats properlyinto the pulleygroove.
12. Checktheotherendof the belt
(enginepulley)to insurethat it is seated
properlyinto the groove.
13. Reinstallthe belt cover. See
Replacingthe Belt Coverinthis Section.
ADJUSTING
WHEELDRIVECONTROL
Lossofwheel drive indicatesthat the
WheelDriveControlmay needadjust-
ment. Thisconditioncould alsobethe
resultof notcompletelyengaginga wheel
speedgearsetting. Beforeyou adjustthe
wheeldrive control cable,movetheWheel
SpeedControlLeverto 1 (allthe way
back)or to 3 (all the wayforward). If the
wheelsstill do not engage,adjustthe
wheeldrive clutch spring.
1. Removethe belt cover(SeeRemoving
and Replacingthe Belt cover)andlocate
the wheeldrive clutch spring.
2. Measurethe lengthof the body of the
wheeldrive clutch spring (Figure5-9).

3. EngagetheWheelDriveControlBail
andmeasurethe extendedlengthof the
spring body again(Figure5-10).

4. Thedifferencebetweenthetwo mea-
surementsshould beapproximately1/4".
Adjust if the resultdoes not meetthis
specification. Springextensionis
adjustedwith a cableadjuster(R, Figure
3-1) onthewheel drivecable. To adjust,
holdtheturnbuckle(A, Figure5-11) while
turning eachadjuster (B,Figure5-11)
awayfrom the turnbuckle1/2turn each.
