Mulching Mode
The mulchingmode cuts andrecutsgrass
clippingswithin themower housing
beforerecyclingthe finely cut clippings
into the lawn. Mulchingmakesit easier
for the the lawn to absorbthe grass
nutrientsbackinto the soil,
SettingUpMulchingMode
1. With the engineand bladestopped,
removethe GrassCatcheror the Side-
Dischargeattachment.
2. Lift openthodischargeoutlet guard
(K, Figure4-1).
3. Positiontheplugwith the word "TOP"
facing up andpushthe Mulching Plug
firmly into the dischargeoutlet(Figure
4-4).
4. Theplug's flange (rim) mustfit snugly
againstthe edgeof the dischargeoutletto
ensureefficientmulching (Figure4-4).

2. Graspthe MulchingPlug's hand-grip
with onehandandpull backuntil the plug
clearsthe dischargeoutlet.
Side-Discharge Mode
UsetheSide-DischargeChuteto disperse
grassclippings onto the lawn.
SettingUpthe Side-DischnrgeChute
1. With the engineandbladestopped,
removethe GrassCatcheror Mulching
Plug.
2. Lift openthedischargeoutlet guard
(K, Figure4-1) and lowerthe Side-
DischargeChuteopening(B,Figure4-1)
onto the dischargeoutlettab (A). Make
sure it coversthe tab completely.
Removingthe Side-DischargeChute
1. Withtheengineandbladestopped,lift
openon thedischargeoutletguard (K,
Figure4-1).
2. With the other hand,graspthe Side-
DischargeChuteandguideit up andoff
the dischargeoutlettab.

1. Movelawnmowertoa clear, level
area - if on agrassyarea,makesurethe
grassis lowenoughasto notinterfere
withbladerotationwhenstarting.
2. Inspectareato be cut- Checkfor and
removedebrissuchas rocks,toys, wire,
bones,sticks, etc.,which could bepicked
up andthrown by the blade. Also inspect
theterrain for holesor otherobstacles.
Removingthe MulchingPlug
1. Withthe engineandbladestopped,lift
openthedischargeoutletguard.
3. Checkmower-
Checkthe mowerfor looseor missing
hardware,Tightenor replacebefore
starting themower.
Checkthe OperatorPresenceControl
Bailfor freedomof movement.
Checkthe WheelDriveControlBailfor
freedomof movement.
Checkbladefor excessivewear or
damage. Do not operatethe mower
with a damagedblade.
S_curelyconnectthesparkplugwire to
thesparkplug.
4. Adjusthandlebarheight- Themower
hasthreehandlebarheightswhichcanbe
adjustedasfollows:
a. Loosenoneofthe lower handlebar
adjustmentknobs (H,Figure4-5) and
givethe knob a tapto freethe
handlebarstrut (K)for adjustment.

b. Adjust the handlebarstothe
desiredheightandthen tightenthe
handlebaradjustmentknobs. Make
surethat the squareshankonthe
screw(J,Figure4-5) seatssquarely
intooneof the squareslots (I).
To avoid personal injury, never adjust
cuttingheightwhile engineis running.
Releaseall handlebarcontrolsandwait
for all motionto stopbefore adjusting
cuttingheight.
5. Setcuttingheight- You cansot the
mowerto anyof six cutting heights.
Cuttingheightsrangefromapproximately
1/1/4"to 4".
NOTE:Actualcutting heightwill vary
accordingto grass,terrain,andsoilcon-
ditions.
