Operation
Before operatingthe mower, carefully
read and understandall safety, control
and operating instructions in this
Manual, the separate EngineOwner's
Manualandthedecalsonthe machine.
Failure to followtheseinstructionscan
resultinseriouspersonalinjury.
Never operate the mower with the
discharge outlet guard removed or
proppedopen.
Do not operate mower without the
GrassCatcher,MulchingPlugor Side-
DischargeChuteinplace.
Never change mowing modes or
empty the Grass Catcher while the
engineis running.
Check the condition of the Grass
Catcherfor excessivewear ordeterio-
ration. If damaged,contactan autho-
rized dealer or the factory for a
replacement.
INTRODUCTION
Readthis Sectionthoroughlybeforeyou
start the engine. Thentakethe timeto
familiarizeyourself with the mower's
basicoperation.
Findanopen, levelareaandpractice
usingthe mowercontrols. Onlyafteryou
becomefamiliar with the mowershould
you use it in smallerareasor onuneven
terrain.

RAPID ATTACHTM SYSTEM
The RapidAttachSystem(Figure4-1) is a
featuredesignedinto the mowerdeck
which enablesyou to install andremove
the GrassCatcher,the Side-Discharge
Chuteandthe MulchingPlug quicklyand
easily.

Chuteboth use the samesystem. This
systemconsists of an elongatedtab (A,
Figure4-1) onthe top of the discharge
outletanda receptacle(B) built into the
top of the GrassCatcherdoor andthe
Side-DischargeChute.
Attachingthe MulchingPlugis just as
easy. Hold openthe dischargeoutlet
guard(K,Figure4-1) andinsertthe plug
(L), with the word "TOP"facingup, into
the dischargeoutlet.

SETTING UP MOWING MODES
Thelawn mowerhasthree mowing
modes:baggingmode,mulching mode
andside-dischargemode. Thefollowing
providesdescriptionsofthe three modes
andhowto implementthem.
BaggingMode
The mowerisset upfor baggingmode
whenthe GrassCatcherisattachedto the
dischargeoutlet.
TheGrassCatcheris equippedwith two
handlesanda swing-opendoorthat
makesemptyingeasy. Usethe wire-
formed handleto helpattach,remove,
transport andemptythe bag. Usethe
rearcloth handleto lift the bottom of the
bagwhen emptying.
TheGrassCatcheralsohasa
GrassGaugeTMgrass-fill indicator(Figure
4-3) which makesit easyto tell whenthe
bagis full. Theindicatorisa rectangular
pieceof cloth sewnto the top of the bag.
Theindicator laysflat againstthe bag
whenthe bagis full (F,Figure4-3) and
billows(G)whenthe bagis not full.
NOTE:Windy conditionsmayaffectthe
indicator'sabilityto providean accurate
bagfill reading.
SettingUpBaggingMode
1. Withtheengineandbladestopped,
removethe MulchingPlugor Side-
DischargeChute.
2. Graspthe GrassCatcherby the wire-
formed handle. With the other hand,hold
openthedischargeoutletguard (C,Figure
4-2).

3. Lower (at anangle)the bagdoor (D,
Figure4-2) onto the tab (E)onthe
dischargeoutlet. Makesurethe bagdoor
seatssquarelyonto the tab andcovers
the tab completely.
Removingthe GrassCatcher
1. Whenmowing,the GrassCatcheris
full whenthe grassfill indicatorlaysflat
againstthe bag(F,Figure4-3).
Analternativemethodfor judging bag
fullnessis to nudgethe bagwith your
foot. Thebagwill give easilywhen not
full, andwill resistwhenfull.
