Electronic Governor
Overview, Diagnosing, and Troubleshooting
(Units with Governor Control Units 24 584 40-S or 24 584 56-S)
There have been some reports regarding the function, adjustment, and troubleshooting of the electronic governor system.

General Description
The electronic governor regulates the engine speed at varying
loads. It consists of linkage, a digital linear actuator (DLA),
and a governor control unit (GCU). See Figures 1-3.
Component Description
The Linkage consists of a spring and other linkage pieces

The Governor Control Unit (GCU) regulates the engine
speed by a variable input voltage from the application
(potentiometer or a single pole, single throw (SPST) switch).
GCU safety features include an engine overspeed condition,
the GCU will shut down the engine by grounding the
ignition modules. Also, if power is lost to the GCU, the
engine will shut down the engine by grounding the ignition.
The Digital Linear Actuator (DLA) converts electrical signals
into precise stepped rotational movement through a stator-
rotor combination. Note: The DLA is not a solenoid. It is
a delicate precision motor. Do not put force on the center

and linkage styles have been used to date. The new DLA and
linkage style is backwards compatible. See Figure 2.
