WARNING: Accidental Starts!
Disabling engine. Accidental starting can cause severe injury or death. Before working on the engine or equipment, disable the
engine as follows: Disconnect the spark plug lead.
1. Ensure oil and gas are ę to the correct operational
levels.
2. Start lawn mower and release brake bail to verify if the
ignition grounds and the engine stops.
3. If the ignition fails to ground out, use a Ě blade
screwdriver and short the ground tab and the brake
lever by contacting both. See Figure 1.
Courage XT-7 Flywheel Brake Ignition Grounding Issue
On some Courage XT-7 engines it is possible that the ignition grounding system on the Ě¢ brake may remain "open,"
even though the brake bail has been released. In the event that an engine is not grounding or Ĵ down, use the following
steps to diagnose and correct the problem.

4. Remove four Torx screws securing engine cover insert
and remove insert.
5. Remove three hex Ě nuts and two hex Ě
screws securing engine cover, and remove cover.
6. Visually inspect the position of the brake lever in
relation to the brake ground tab, with the bail released.
See Figure 2.
7. If the two surfaces do not come into contact with each
other, adjust the curved ground tab by bending it
towards the brake pad. See Figure 2.
8. Engage the brake bail until the brake lever rotates with
approximately 1/16-1/8” travel at the location of the
contacting surface. The adjustment will be correct when
the ground tab remains in contact through initial range
of motion and no longer remains in contact with further
bail travel. See Figure 3.
