Steering the Tractor
Youri1000seriestractoris equippedwith aninnovative
steeringdesignwhichis somewhatdifferentfromthatof
the traditionalsteeringwheeltypelawntractor.Turning
the steeringwheelnotonly turnsthe frontwheels,but
also controlsthe drivelinkageofthe two hydrotransmis-
sionsthatdrivethe tractor.Thisfeatureallowsyou to
varythe radiusof turnsfroma normalwideturndownto
a zeroturn.Somepracticemaybe requiredto become
accustomedto the steeringof yourtractor.Thesteering
worksas follows:
° The steeringwheelturnsapproximatelytwo turnsstop
to stop.Withthe centerpositionbeingthe straight
aheadposition.
° Minorturnsof the steeringwheelfromthe center
position(up to approx.100) will turnonly thefront
axlesand resultinwiderturns.
° Increasingtheturn of the steeringwheel (beyond10°)
resultsin increasinglytighterturns.As the steering
mechanismturnsthe frontwheels,it alsochanges
the positionof the transmissiondrivelinkageto slow
downthe innerrearwheel inthe turnandadjustthe
speedof the outerwheelas necessaryto complete
the desiredturn.Turnthe steeringwheelbackto the
centerpositionas the turn is completed.
NOTE:It is not necessarytoreleasethedrivepedal
whenmakinga turn.Thechangeto the transmission
linkageoccursregardlessof howfar the drivepedalis
depressed.Whenthesteeringwheelis straightened,the
tractorwillreturnto thespeedset bythedrivepedal.
° Turningthe steeringwheelfullyto its stopineither
directionwill fullyturnthe frontwheels,reversethe
directionof the innerwheelandadjusttheouter wheel
speedto executea zeroturn inthe chosendirection.
Turnthe steeringwheelbackto the centerpositionas
the turn is completed.
NOTE:As the steeringwheelis turnedfurthertoward
itsstop, theeffortneededto tumthesteeringwheel
increases.
IMPORTANT:Makingtightor zeroturnson grasswill
greatlyincreasethe potentialfor defacementof the turf.
Driving On Slopes

• Mowupanddown slopes,neveracross.
• Watchforholes,ruts, bumps,rocks,or otherhidden
objects.Uneventerraincouldoverturnthe machine.
Tallgrasscan hideobstacles.
• Avoidturnswhendrivingon a slope.If a turnmust
be made,turndownhillon the slope.Turninguphill
increasesthe possibilityof a tractorrollover.
• Avoidstoppingwhendriving upa slope. If it is neces-
saryto stopwhiledriving upa slope,start upsmoothly
andcarefullyto reducethe possibilityof flippingthe
tractoroverbackward.
