Grand Wega
™
rear-projection LCD TVs 50" & 60"
These Grand Wega TVs possess the extraordinary per-
formance and flexibility required to wear the XBR badge
— found only on Sony’s best TVs. Thanks to cutting-
edge optics and video processing technology, they will
amaze you with bright, gorgeous colors and pixel-perfect
clarity — all without a bulky cabinet. (Built-in handles
allow easy carrying by two people.) The combination of
high resolution and compact size makes these ideal big-
screen choices for smaller rooms, too.
XBR Grand Wegas are so packed with pixels (1366 x
768) that they make your most demanding sources, like
1080i HDTV broadcasts (separate HDTV tuner required)
and progressive-scan DVD (480p) look magnificent.
Compared to previous Grand Wegas, these models have improved
overall black levels by 25%, further enhancing picture brightness and
contrast. LCD panels are virtually immune to misconvergence, “burn-
in,” and other limitations of conventional rear-projection TVs.
Hooking up a DVD player, VCR, TiVo recorder and PlayStation is
no problem because each TV offers a total of 7 A/V inputs, including
two HD-capable component video inputs — so you can connect a
progressive-scan or regular DVD player and an HDTV tuner (check
out Sony’s super-versatile SAT-HD200 on pg. 146).
Key Features:
HDTV monitor (compatible with HDTV/SDTV formats – when connect-
ed to a separate HDTV tuner – panel resolution is 768p) • 3 LCD panels (1366 x 768
pixels each) • widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio • 130
º
x 60
º
viewing angle • adjustable DRC
MultiFunction VI (upconverts NTSC sources) • 181-channel NTSC tuner • TwinView
2-tuner PIP (split screen) • 2 HD-capable component video inputs (compatible with
1080i/720p/480p/480i signals) • DVI HDTV input • warranty: 1 year parts and labor.

If you’ve been TV shopping recently, you know that one of
the hottest display technologies around is DLP (Digital Light
Processing). DLP has several advantages over conventional
CRT-based rear-projection TVs (notice there are no CRT-type
RPTVs in this catalog). Of course, the most obvious are more
manageable size and weight. Both the 46" HLN467W and 56"
HLN567W are under 20" deep and weigh less than 100 lbs.!
These “tabletop” models won’t take over your room, and if
you need to move one, it won’t be a three- or four-person job!
DLP’s other advantages become clear the moment you sit
down to watch. The picture looks bright, detailed, and clean,
from edge to edge and corner to corner. With a single image
chip replacing three CRT picture tubes, focus is perfect right
out of the box, and will stay that way with no periodic tweak-
ing required. (Also, no worries about screen burn-in from static
images, or from viewing 4:3 material with “side bars.”)
A built-in “scaler” converts all incoming signals to the DLP
chip’s native 1280 x 720 resolution. Film-based 480i material
also receives Faroudja DCDi
™
video processing. Samsung’s
proprietary DNIe
™
(Digital Natural Image engine) system
subtly enhances detail and color, and applies digital noise
reduction to clean up lower quality signals.
Both of these HDTV-ready models have a total of 7 A/V
inputs, including three component video inputs (two are HD-
capable and the other is 480i/480p for interlaced- or progressive-
scan DVD). For the most spectacular picture these sets can deliver, use the
high-resolution, pure digital DVI connection (Sony’s advanced SAT-HD200 HDTV tuner on
pg. 146 has a DVI output, as does Samsung’s remarkable DVD-HD931 DVD player on pg. 95).
The future of projection TV looks bright … and clear!
