These ready-to-go packages offer satellite speakers, a center speaker, and
a powered subwoofer. Because the gear is voice-matched and optimized
to work together, these systems sound good, and are easy to set up.
They’re ideal for folks who have a home theater receiver and are just
looking for speakers, home theater newbies, and buyers on a budget.
A few systems allow you to tack on additional matched surround
speakers, for use with 6.1-channel or 7.1-channel receivers (see chart

What exactly do the six speakers — the front left and right, center,
and surround left and right speakers, and the powered subwoofer

A. Your center channel — the hardest working speaker
Your center channel speaker handles most of the audio on a sound-
track, especially on-screen dialogue and effects. It’s important that
your center channel has good frequency response and power handling
— it has a lot of work to do! (See the chart for specs —below, right.)
For seamless home theater, be sure to pick a center channel that’s
voice-matched to your front left and right speakers (see the Stereo
Speakers chart above for recommendations).
B. The front left and right stereo speakers pull double duty
When you fire up a multichannel DVD, your front left and right speak-
ers handle soundtrack info like the music score that accompanies the
action, and effects that move across the front soundstage. And when
you’re in the mood for music, your front left and right speakers serve as
your main stereo pair.
C. You’re surrounded!
Helicopters hover! Bullets zing past! The main job of surround speakers
is to play ambient sound and effects that put you in the middle of the
action. (Some

surround formats use
an extra surround or
surrounds for 6.1- or
7.1-channel sound. See
page 100 for more info.)
D. Get bass you can
feel
— thanks to a
powered subwoofer!
You haven’t experienced a bomb blast
or a T. rex’s bellow without a powered
sub! With a built-in amp dedicated to
only the lowest bass tones, a sub dramatically
increases the impact of your movies — it’s vital for Dolby Digital and
