This chapter explains how to set up your printer for the first time. It includes information on finding a good location for the printer, unpacking and checking the shipment contents, installing consumables (toner cartridges, OPC drum cartridge, and fuser oil roller), loading the media cassette, turning the printer on, and printing a startup page. - .

No other devices should be connected to this outlet, as overheating could cause fire or electric shock. The printer draws 11 A at 120 V, or 6 A at 240 V. Your printer requires a properly grounded AC outlet with a rated line voltage of 120 V or 220–240 V.
Maximum Electrical Current Required during operation is 11 amps for a 120 V system, and 6 amps for a 220– 240 V system. Noise-generating Equipment Should not be connected to the same electrical outlet as the printer. Recommended Frequency 60 Hz ±2 Hz for a 120 V system, and 50 Hz ±2 Hz for a 220–240 V system. - Install the face-up (output) tray and the multipurpose (input) tray. Remove the fuser unit spacer and the fuser roller separators from the fuser unit, and install the fuser oil roller. Remove the toner spacers, install the four toner cartridges, and install the OPC drum cartridge. Remove the media cassette spacer and load the media cassette. Remove the spacers from the multipurpose tray. Remove the shipping tie-wrap.
1 Fold the face-up tray upward, then fit the tray’s right coupling arm into the corresponding hole in the printer. When doing this, hold the metal spring leaf (ends in a loop) close to the face-up tray. Note: Make sure that the metal spring leaf extends downward from the tray and does not enter the hole in the printer. » 2 Fit the face-up tray’s left coupling arm into the hole in the printer.
- " & $ " 1 Slide the fuser unit on the left side of the printer out as far as it will go. 2 Remove the tape and the two metal fuser roller separators. 3 Remove the spacer (labeled “A”). A 4 Remove the fuser oil roller from its package. 5 Remove its tape, protective cover and two pins. ,- .
Caution: Oil on this roller will come off on your skin if touched directly. Shield this roller from dust and toner when removing or inserting into the fusing unit. 6 Hold the fuser oil roller as shown in the diagram. 7 Align two colored tabs—one on the fuser unit, and one on the fuser oil roller. 8 Carefully lower the fuser oil roller until it clicks into place. 9 Slide the fuser unit on the left side of the printer firmly back into the printer.
» - Note: The toner in the cartridge is nontoxic. However, if you get any toner on your hands or clothes, wash it off promptly with cool water. 1 Open the printer’s front cover. 2 Pull out and remove the foam spacer (labeled with the tag “B”). ! 1 Remove each new toner cartridge from its package. Each toner cartridge has a color-coded end that corresponds to the colored cartridge slots.
2 Evenly distribute the toner in the cartridge. Holding a cartridge with both hands, gently rock it from sideto-side seven or eight times. 3 Holding the toner cartridge so the arrow is at the top, insert the cartridge as far as it will go. 14dv 4 Rotate the toner cartridge clockwise until the “ ” mark on the cartridge is aligned with Lock on the printer. Caution: Be sure to rotate the cartridge all the way to the Lock mark. Otherwise, toner may spill.
6 Turn the knob clockwise as far as it will go to move the cartridge into position. - Note: The knob will not turn unless the toner cartridge is set properly. If the knob will not turn, recheck for proper toner cartridge installation. » 7 Repeat steps 2 to 6 for the next two toner cartridges. 8 Repeat steps 2 to 4 for the last toner cartridge. $ ! Caution: Never touch the surface (the blue part) of the drum or hit or rub the drum surface.
3 Turn the small lever on the top of the OPC drum cartridge counterclockwise to the Unlock position. 4 Align the guide with the top of the printer rail by matching up the small arrows. Caution: If the guide on the OPC drum cartridge is not aligned with the top of the rail, the cartridge may be damaged. 5 Push the OPC drum cartridge slowly all the way into the printer until it clicks.
- 1 Slide the media cassette out. 2 Remove the tape and cardboard spacer from the right side of the cassette. 3 Remove the foam spacer (labeled “C”) from the media cassette. C Note: You may have to slightly open the media guide clips. » " Refer to chapter 2, “Print Media,” in the Reference manual for details on the types of media that are suitable for printing. 1 Take a stack of about 250 sheets (½ ream).
# 1 Press the metal plate until it latches. 2 Squeeze in the retainers to move the media guide clips all the way toward the outer edges. 3 Align the four corners of the media stack, and insert it under the fluke at the front right side, with the print side facing down. A fill-limit mark is on the inside of the cassette. Note: Make sure the top sheet is under the fluke. Do not load more sheets than the maximum specified.
5 - Align the left guide clip with the appropriate media size mark. Note: Automatic media size detection cannot be assured if the vertical guide clip is even slightly out of position. If this occurs, slide the vertical guide clip momentarily to the left edge, then reposition it according to the proper hole in the scale. » 6 Push the media cassette firmly back into the printer.
3 Remove the tie-wrap (labeled “E”). 4 Push the multipurpose tray unit firmly back into the printer. !! 3 Caution: Remember to turn off the printer before you install an option. If you purchased any printer options, such as extra memory (SIMMs), emulations, an interface card, or an internal hard disk, install them after you have successfully printed a startup page. More information about startup pages is included in the Reference manual.
4 5 2 Refer to the instructions in chapter 3 (parallel and serial), chapter 4 (Ethernet), or chapter 5 (Macintosh) to connect your printer. ! " ! 3 Plug the power cord into the connector on the left side of the printer. Note: In compliance with UL guidelines, “The appliance inlet is considered to be the main disconnect device.” » 4 Turn the printer on. After a brief warmup (less than five minutes), the printer produces a startup page.
! " # $ % If you see this... It’s probably because... Do this... CHECK WASTE TONER message appears in the printer message window. The waste toner box isn’t properly installed. Make sure the box sits loosely in its compartment and that the top of the box is not wedged under the top of the compartment. Printouts seem faded on one side of the page. The printer is not on a level enough surface. Level the printer surface. The slant of the surface holding the printer should not exceed 1.

This chapter explains how to connect your printer to a computer through either the parallel port or serial port. » Note: If you’re connecting to a computer through an Ethernet network, refer to chapter 4, “Connecting to an Ethernet Network.” 1 Turn off both the printer and the PC. 2 Connect the printer to the PC. If you’re connecting to a PC through a parallel interface, connect the printer to the PC as described in “Making a Parallel Connection” on page 3-2.
/ 55 5 need to purchase the cables from your vendor or a local computer store. To connect your printer to a single PC, you need a parallel cable with a 25-pin male connector and a 36-pin male connector. $ " Your printer supports both Centronics parallel and IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel communications. The type of parallel cable you use depends on the type of parallel communication your computer supports (check your computer user’s manual if you’re unsure).
/ 5 b Attach the 36-pin end of the cable to the printer’s parallel port, and close the clips. $" 3 #" Turn on both the printer and the PC. A startup page should print. If it doesn’t, refer to chapter 8, “Troubleshooting,” of the Operation manual. 4 Test the communication between the printer and the PC. You can do this by sending a file from one of your applications, or refer to chapter 8, “Troubleshooting,” of the Operation manual.
/ 5 $ For best results, the serial cable should be less than 25 feet (7.6 meters) long. ! 1 Turn off both the printer and the PC. 2 Connect the PC and the printer using a serial cable. a Connect the serial cable (with the null modem adapter attached) to the PC’s 9- or 25-pin male serial port, and tighten the screws. b Connect the other end of the cable to the printer’s serial port, and tighten the screws.
- 6 3 $ 4 If you're replacing a PostScript printer, you can probably start printing now with the printing software already in place. Refer to your application documentation for instructions on sending documents to the printer.
- 6 3 PostScript driver. If the application does not provide a PostScript driver, contact the application manufacturer to see if one has become available since you bought the program. Also, PostScript drivers for some applications are available through the Internet; see appendix A, “QMS Customer Support,” for information. Also, check to see if application notes (tips for printing from specific applications) are available for your application from Q-FAX, or the Internet.
- 6 3 2 In the Welcome dialog box, select Install Printer Utilities and Drivers. 3 Read the installation note and then choose Next>. 4 In the Installation Type dialog box, select either General Use Installation or Network/Custom Installation, and choose Next>. 5 Select QMS Advanced Level 2 Driver for Win95,98 and choose Next>. 6 Read the help screen for Microsoft’s Add Printer Wizard, and choose Next>. 7 Follow the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard.
- 6 3 The installation program copies the driver-related files into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and updates the Registry. The program also copies PPD and PDF files into separate subdirectories under the specified installation directory. (See your printer documentation for more information on using these files.) You may delete these files if you don't use applications that require them.
- 6 3 Installation Caution: Windows limits the total number of installed printers to 16. Problems may occur if you install both the QMS PostScript printer driver and a QMS Win95 PPD for the Microsoft PostScript printer driver. If they have the same printer model name (for instance “QMS magicolor 330 CX”), the driver registry entry for one will overwrite the other (even if you have assigned different printer names), and unpredictable behavior will result.
- 6 3 11 Change to the x:\PLATFORM\WINDOWS\DRIVERS\PSLVL2 directory, where x is the drive in which you installed the CDROM in step 1. QMS.INF displays in the File Name list. 12 Choose OK to return to the Install from Disk window. 13 Choose OK again. A list of QMS printers displays in the Printers list. 14 Select the appropriate printer, and then continue following the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard to complete the installation.
- 6 3 15 When you're returned to the QMS Printer Utilities Setup, continue to install other printer utilities or drivers, or choose Cancel to exit from the setup program. 16 Remove the CD-ROM, and store it in a safe place. 17 Access the default driver settings through the Start/Settings/Printers menu. Use the online help tips and information on how to use specific features of the driver. Note: The QMS Level 2 Windows Driver ships with a default setting of “Compress Output.
- 6 3 Installation » Note: If you want to be able to print to a QMS CrownNet port, the QMS CrownNet Print Utility for Windows or QMS Network Print Monitor must be installed on your Windows NT workstation or server, and a port must be created before continuing with this installation procedure. See the PRTMONNT.PDF file (Adobe Acrobat format) in the \PLATFORM\WIN_NT\MONITOR directory of the QMS Software Utilities CD-ROM for details on installing and setting up this utility.

While the application’s scaling factor is likely to affect the size and placement of image elements, the driver scaling factor simply scales the resultant image from the center of the page.

The QMS CrownNet Ethernet interface is a combination of hardware and host software that allows your printer to be connected to an Ethernet network that supports the following: Network Connection Protocol AppleTalk, Macintosh OS EtherTalk LAN Manager, LAN Server NetBIOS/NetBEUI NetWare IPX/SPX TCP/IP TCP/IP Windows 3.
' 3 / The printer provides a twisted-pair (10BaseT/100BaseTX) Ethernet interface. Twisted-pair Ethernet connections use RJ45 connectors. 1 Turn off the printer, and unplug the power cord. 2 Connect one end of the twisted-pair Ethernet cable to the printer’s Ethernet port. 3 Connect the other end of the cable to the 10BaseT/100BaseTX concentrator. !" 4 Plug in the printer, and turn it on.
6 6 CrownAdmin (for Macintosh), CrownAdmin (for AIX, HP-UX, Solaris/SunOS, and Windows/Windows NT/Windows for Workgroups), or CrownNet Manager (for OS/2)—For more information on using this software, refer to the appropriate chapter in the QMS CrownNet System Administrator’s Guide or to the software’s online help. These names must be unique. » Note: In CrownAdmin, the printer shows up as QMS_xxxx_Print_ System_hardwareaddress, where xxxx is the printer model number and hardwareaddress is the printer’s hardware address as found on the printer startup page. This address will be blank until the interface has been reset following installation.
6 6 2 In the Administration/Communications/Resident NIC/CrownNet/NetWare/Config PServer/PServer Name[1], PServer Name[2], and PServer Name[3] menus, enter the name of the bindery print server. Note: The three PServer Name[x] menus allow you to identify one print server with a name up to 47 characters long. (Up to 16 characters can be entered in each of the 3 menus). You cannot use these 3 menus to identify 3 print servers.
6 6 names (for example, PUBS_PSERVER). At the printer control panel only, a space must be used following the last character of the print server name to end the name. For example, the print server name FIRSTGROUP_GROUPS_BLUE_TEAM_TEAMS_CRC_QMS is 42 characters long, and must be entered as follows: PSERVER NAME[1] FIRST_GROUP_GROU PSERVER NAME[2] PS_BLUE_TEAM_TEA PSERVER NAME[3] MS_CRC_QMS where is the space character.

Ethernet has become the industry standard network connection, and it is the most common method currently used to connect a Macintosh to a QMS printer. An Ethernet port is built into your magicolor 330 Print System and most current Macintosh computers. » Note: If you want to print via LocalTalk, refer to the Options manual for information on installing an optional LocalTalk interface.
/ 7 1 Turn off both the printer and the Macintosh. 2 Connect the printer to the Macintosh via the printer’s built-in Ethernet port. 3 Turn on both the printer and the Macintosh. 4 Install a printer driver. See “Macintosh Printing Software” on page 5-3. 5 Now you’re ready to print. 4 If you’re replacing a PostScript laser printer, you can probably start printing now with the printing software already in place.
6 3 $ ! QMS Macintosh Utilities are programs for controlling the printer from the Macintosh. It is included on the QMS Software Utilities CD-ROM that shipped with your printer. 1 With the Macintosh on, insert the QMS Software Utilities CDROM in your Macintosh’s CD-ROM drive. 2 If necessary, double-click the CD-ROM icon to display the CD-ROM contents. 3 Double-click the PLATFORM folder icon to display the folder contents.
6 3 9 Choose the Install button to begin. Installation takes only a few minutes. The Installer places all of the options inside a newly created PSExec f folder in the location you chose in step 7. 10 When the installation is finished, you're prompted to choose either Continue or Quit. Continue allows for additional installations of the software, and Quit exits the installer program.
6 3 The QMS magicolor 330 PPD (a printer description file) is provided with your printer so you can take advantage of special printer features while using the LaserWriter driver. 1 If you haven’t already, install a LaserWriter driver. Refer to your Macintosh documentation or see if there is an installed LaserWriter driver in the Chooser. 2 If you haven't already, follow the instructions given above in “Installing Macintosh Utilities” on page 5-4.
6 2 Install the appropriate printer description file(s) for your application from the PSExec f folder: If you use FreeHand, install the version 4.x PPD in the Printer Descriptions folder. If you use PageMaker 5.x, install the version 4.x PPD in the Printer Descriptions folder. If you use QuarkXPress 3.3 or later, you can use the QMS magicolor 330 PPD. However, if you use an earlier version, install the QMS magicolor 330 PDF in the QuarkXPress folder in the PDF folder.

When the printer experiences a condition that will not allow the printer to operate, or the printer is not ready to print.
5 = 5 using Select, Previous, Next, and Menu buttons, press the Online button to take the printer off line. Button Function The Online button switches the printer between online and offline status. When off line, the printer continues printing until it has finished all jobs received, but it doesn’t accept any new data. Although jobs continue to compile and print using the data already received, a job may be interrupted. The printer must be offline and idle before accessing the menu system.
% & ' ( ) Button Function The Menu button provides access to the configuration menu. First press the Online button to take the printer off line, and then press the Menu button to access the configuration menu. When you’re changing the printer configuration, press this button to cancel a change (before pressing the Select buttons), to return to a previous menu, or to return to a previous character when entering character information.
