CHOOSING THE RIGHT CROWN MICROPHONE
POLAR PATTERN
How the mic picks up sound from different directions.
An omnidirectional mic picks up sound equally well
from all around it. Examples: GLM-100, CM-150.
Cardioid, supercardioid and hypercardioid mics pick up sound
mainly from one direction: in front of the microphone. Examples:
GLM-200, LM Series.
A hemispherical (half-omni) mic is used on a surface.
The mic picks up sound equally well from all direc-
tions, above the surface it is mounted on. Examples:
PZM Series.
Half-cardioid or half-supercardioid mics are used on a surface.
They pick up sound from above the surface they are
mounted on, and mainly in front of the microphone.
Examples: PCC and MB Series.
Choose omni or PZM mics when you need:
All-around pickup.
Pickup of room acoustics.
Extended low-frequency response (unless the lows are filtered out).
Low handling noise.
Low wind noise.
No up-close bass boost.
Clip-on miking.
Choose non-omni mics when you need:
Selective pickup.
Rejection of sounds behind the microphone.
Rejection of room acoustics and leakage.
More gain-before-feedback.

TRANSDUCER TYPE (ELEMENT TYPE)
How the mic convert s sound to an electrical signal: dynamic,
ribbon or condenser.
Dynamic
Has a diaphragm, an attached coil of wire, and a magnet. When
sound vibrates the diaphragm, the coil generates an electrical
signal.
Ribbon
Has a thin metal ribbon in the gap of a magnet. When sound
vibrates the ribbon, it produces a signal.
Condenser
Has a light-weight diaphragm next to a disk. Both are charged
with static electricity by an electret material or an external volt-
age. When sound vibrates the diaphragm, this produces a sig-
nal. Powered by phantom power or battery.
All Crown microphones are the electret condenser type. This
type provides accurate, detailed sound, offers high sensitivity,
and can be made very small.
BOUNDARY OR FREE-FIELD
Where the microphone is placed: on a surface or away from
surfaces.
Boundary microphones are designed to be used on stage
floors, piano lids, hard-surfaced panels, or walls.
Crown boundary mics are the PZM, PCC and MB Series.
Crown free-field mics are the CM, GLM, LM and SASS-P MKII
Series.
FREQUENCY RESPONSE
A measure of the microphone s sound or tonal balance.
