parts that can cause injury to persons;
Check polarity of baery posts. A posive (pos, p,
+) baery post usually has a larger diameter than a
negave (neg, n, –) post;
Determine which post of baery is grounded
(connected) to the chassis. If negave post is
grounded to chassis (as in most vehicles), see item
(v). If posive post is grounded to the chassis, see
item (vi);
For a negave-grounded vehicle, connect the
posive (red) clip from baery charger to posive
(pos, p, +) ungrounded post of baery. Connect the
negave (black) clip to vehicle chassis or engine
block away from baery. Do not connect clip to
carburetor, throle, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body
parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the
frame or engine block;
Connect charger ac supply cord to electric outlet;
and
When disconnecng charger, turn switches to
o, disconnect ac cord, remove clip from vehicle
chassis, and then remove clip from baery terminal.
CHARGING BATTERY OUT OF VEHICLE
1. Follow these steps when baery is outside vehicle. A
spark near the baery may cause a baery explosion.
To reduce risk of a spark near baery:
Check polarity of baery posts. A posive (pos, p,
+) baery post usually has a larger diameter than a
negave (neg, n, –) post;
Aach at least a 60 cm 6-gauge (awg) insulated
baery cable to a negave (neg, n, –) baery post;
Connect the posive (red) charger clip to the
posive (pos, p, +) post of baery;
Posion yourself and the free end of cable as far
away from baery as possible, then connect the
negave (black) charger clip to free end of the
insulated baery cable;
Do not face baery when making nal connecon;
Connect charger AC supply cord to electrical outlet;
and
When disconnecng charger, always do so in
reverse sequence of connecng procedure and
break rst connecon while standing as far away
from baery as praccal.
2. The generator (stator winding) is isolated from the
frame and from the ac receptacle ground pin.
3. Electrical devices that require a grounded receptacle
pin connecon will not funcon if the receptacle
ground pin is not funconal.
