Remove Old Window Interior Component
s – Wood Frame Building (cont.)
Remove Top Sash
NOTE: If top sash is stationary, remove the support
blocks at the bottom of the top sash (FIGURE
8). Be sure to hang on to the sash so it will not
fall when its support blocks are removed.
If sash is “painted-in”, insert a putty knife between
sash and side and head parting stops. Work knife
around all sides to break paint seal.
1. Lower the top sash so it is just above the stool.
2. Use a pry bar or stiff putty knife to pry side parting
stops and head parting stop away from side and
head jambs. Remove all pieces (FIGURES 9, 10 &
11).
Move sash slowly and carefully to
prevent glass from shattering. Wear
full protective clothing including gloves and safe-
ty glasses.
NOTE: If present, hold spring-loaded side bolts in the
disengaged position.
3. Rotate one side of sash inward (FIGURE 11). Cut
sash cord (if present). Some units use a spring
balance that must be disconnected.
4. Continue working sash toward interior and remove
cord or spring from opposite side.
5. Safely discard top sash.
