Surface Preparation
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may
generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes
may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in
children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other
hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment,
such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper
containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead
Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (in US) or contact your local health
authority.
Preparation
To ensure proper adhesion, all surfaces must be clean, dry and free from
dirt, wax, grease, oil, chalk, mildew and loose or peeling paint. Nail holes,
cracks and other surface imperfections should be properly filled, sanded
smooth and dusted clean. All mildew and mold must be completely and
thoroughly removed. Glossy surfaces must be sanded and dusted clean.
Always wear a properly selected and fitted NIOSH/MSHA approved dust
mask or respirator when sanding.
New Wood, Pre-primed Fiberboard, Hardboard, Cedar, Redwood
Sans any exposed wood to a fresh surface. Patch all holes and
imperfections with a wood filler or putty, sand smooth and remove dust.
Two coats of primer may be necessary on cedar and redwood to block
tannins.
Masonry, Aggregate, Block (allow to cure for 30 days)
Remove all surface contamination by washing with an appropriate cleaner.
If necessary, pressure wash with a minimum of 2100 psi, rinse thoroughly
and allow to dry. Remove all form release and curing agents.
Metal
Remove all contaminants and rust. Wipe clean using an appropriate
cleaner.
Vinyl and Aluminum Siding
Wash with an appropriate cleaner to remove any surface contamination.
Do not use colors that are darker than the original vinyl siding.
Caulking
Fill gaps between walls, ceilings, crown moldings and other trim with latex
or siliconized latex caulk after priming the surface.
Mildew
Remove before painting by washing with a solution of 1 part liquid bleach
and 3 parts water. Apply the solution and scrub the mildewed area. Allow
the solution to remain on the surface for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with
water and allow the surface to dry before painting. Wear protective
eyewear, waterproof gloves and protective clothing. Quickly wash off any
of the mixture that comes in contact with your skin. DO NOT ADD
DETERGENTS OR AMMONIA TO THE BLEACH/WATER SOLUTION.
Cleanup Information
Clean spills and spatters immediately with soap and warm water. Clean
hands and tools immediately after use with soap and warm water. After
cleaning, flush spray equipment with mineral spirits to prevent
rusting of the
equipment. Follow manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using
mineral spirits.
