ansmission between items of CCTV control equipment is often carried over twisted-pair cable. This includes data from
control keyboards to a central processor or video switching matrix as well as the data from a controller to a telemetry receiver
at a functional camera. RS485 is a common data transmission standard employed.
RS485 uses signals of about 5 volts in amplitude and are differential which means that only the difference in voltage between
the two cables of the twisted-pair is taken into account. If both of the two wires are interfered with by the same amount then
this is automatically ignored. This makes RS485 very good at getting data a long way with very few errors in noisy environments
The maximum cable dis

ance along which signals will pass reliably is 1200m. This is dependent upon using the correct grade of
cable. Belden 9841 is one such cable, of which there are many.
