Technical Tips
W
hen installing IR cameras, attention should be taken in the positioning of the camera in order to maximise the effectiveness and
c
overage of the IR. Low powered IR LEDs can be affected by environmental conditions resulting in poor performance. Where
po
ssible, the following should be avoided:
n Lar
ge areas of tarmac.
n Ar
eas which are mainly laid to grass.
n Ar
eas with many concrete surfaces.
IR is ab
sorbed by the above types of surface, which can significantly reduce the IR coverage. If the scene does contain areas
men
tioned above, it is advisable to use a high powered IR unit in order to increase the IR performance and compensate against the
environmental conditions.
In normal conditions, IR rays bounce off a surface and are reflected back into the camera. If there is nothing for the IR to bounce off,
the camera will not see the light and it may appear as if the IR is not working. In this situation, when a person or vehicle appears in
the scene the object should then become visible.
Note that the power consumption of IR cameras can increase under cold conditions. This is due to LEDs burning brighter in cold
w
eather and should be taken into consideration when calculating power supply requirements.
