Thissectiononlyappliestoaircooledchillers.Inordertoaccommodatetheaircooled
condenser,thechillermustbelocatedinawellventilatedarea.Aminimumofthreefeet(914.4
mm)ofclearanceisrequiredatboththecondenserairinletandcondenserairdischarge.
Improperclearanceorpoorventilationwillreducethecoolingcapacityofthechillerandmay
causehighrefrigerantpressureproblems.Thecondenserairinlettemperaturemustbeabove
60°F(15°C)inordertoavoidpossiblelowrefrigerantpressuresafetytripsduringstartup.
Theperformanceofanaircooledcondenserisdependentuponmaintainingtheproperflowof
airacrosstheheatexchangersurface.Iftheairflowisrestrictedateithertheintakeor
discharge,thecoolingcapacityofthechillerisreduced.Reducedairflowmayalsoresultinhigh
refrigerantpressureproblemsthatmaycausethechillertoshutdown.Airflowcanalsobe
reducedifthecondenserairinletfiltersbecomecloggedwithdirt.Cleaningthesefiltersshould
bepartoftheroutinemaintenanceprogramforthischiller.Thefrequencyofrequiredcleaning
dependsontheenvironmentinwhichthechilleroperates.Thestandardratedcoolingcapacity
ofthischillerisbasedupon95°F(35°C)ambientairtemperature.Iftheairtemperature
enteringthecondenserisabove95°F(35°C),thecapacitywillbereducedapproximately1%per
1°F(0.5°C).Enteringairtemperatureabove110°F(43°C)mayresultinhighrefrigerantpressure
problemsthatwouldshuttheunitdown.Forthisreason,itisveryimportantthatthechillerbe
locatedwherethewarmdischargeairdoesnotcirculatebackintothecondenserinlet.These
chillersareforindoorusagewithnormalindoorambientairtemperatureenteringthe
condenser.Airtemperaturesbelow60°F(15°C)enteringthecondensermayresultinlow
refrigerantpressurecoldstartupproblems.
ChilledWaterLines
Topreventunwantedcondensation,insulateallchilledwaterpiping.Ifwatervaporcondenses
onthepiping,thestatechangeofthewaterfromgastoliquidwillresultinasubstantialheat
loadthatbecomesanadditionalburdenforthechiller.
Standardportablechillersprovide50°F(10°C)coolanttotheprocess.Undernormaloperating
conditionstherewillbea10°F(6°C)risethroughtheprocessresultingin60°F(16°C)return
coolanttemperaturetothechiller.
Theimportanceofproperlysizedpipingbetweenthechillerandprocesscannotbe
overemphasized.SeetheASHRAEHandbookorothersuitabledesignguideforproperpipe
sizing.Ingeneral,runfullsizepipingouttotheprocessandthenreducethepipesizetomatch
theconnectionsontheprocessequipment.Poorlydesignedpipingisoneofthemostcommon
causesofunsatisfactorychillerperformance.Avoidunnecessarilylonglengthsofhosesorquick
disconnectfittingsthatoffer
highresistancetowaterflow.Whenmanifoldsarerequiredfor
waterdistribution,installthemasclosetotheusepointaspossible.Provideflowbalancing
valvesateachchilledwaterusepointtoassureadequatewaterdistributionintheentire
system.Theconnectionlabeled“ChilledWaterSupply”deliversfluidto
theprocessandthe
connectionlabeled“ChilledWaterReturn”receiveswaterbackfromtheprocess.Typically,
