Feature Description
Microsoft FrontPage Provides an easy way to create and manage professional-quality Web sites. A single user
licence is delivered with Windows NT Server 4.0.
Communications Features
Point-to-Point
Tunnelling Protocol
(PPTP)
Provides a way to use public data networks (for example the Internet) to create a virtual
private network. Connections are via TCP/IP, but other protocols can be encapsulated and data
can be encrypted for privacy. Remote access using RAS can be extended across the Internet
without changing the client software.
Multi-Protocol Router
(MPR)
Using this service a Windows NT Server can be deployed as a low cost LAN-LAN routing
solution, eliminating the need for a dedicated router. It provides LAN-LAN routing for
IPX/SPX, TCP/IP and AppleTalk®.
Dial-up RAS and ICS (Internet Connection Services included in Option pack) providing
customisable client software, central phonebook and authentication
Telephony API 2.1 The Telephony API (TAPI) enables development of integrated computertelephony
applications.
Cryptography APIs A set of encryption APIs that allow the development of applications that work securely over
non-secure networks, such as the Internet.
Network Integration Services
Distributed Component
Object Model
(DCOM).
The Component Object Model (COM) allows software developers to create component
applications. Windows NT Server includes Distributed COM which extends COM to allow
components to communicate across networks.
DNS Server A version of DNS service providing a graphical administration utility and integration with
WINS services for dynamic updates of host names/addresses.
FTP, DHCP File Transfer Protocol. Dynamic Host Control Protocol enables the server to dynamically
provide network settings to DHCP clients
Novell NetWare
interoperability
Client and Gateway Services support NetWare Directory Services (NDS). Functionality
includes resource browsing, authentication and printing under NDS. Authentication of multiple
NDS trees and processing of login scripts is supported.
Windows 95 Remote
Program Load (RPL)
Diskless Windows 95 clients may be booted from a Windows NT Server.
Multimedia Services
Streaming Media
Support
Windows Media Player and NetShow Services enables delivery of audio and video via
Internet/Intranet
Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition
The prime reasons for choosing the Enterprise Edition of Windows NT Server 4.0 are clustering and greater support of
memory for applications. The features over and above Windows NT Server 4.0 are described below.
