Exercise 1: Establishing a Direct Connection
Pre-Setup Discussion
In this exercise, you will:
• Connect a PC to the phone system.
• Establish a connection in VMMI.
• Master clear the system.
• Set the system clock.
Programming with a PC
One of the ways to program the DXP, DXP Plus, FX96, FXT, FXS, and FXII is to connect a
computer directly to the system using a modular telephone line cord and adapter for the 9-pin
serial port on the computer. You can then log in and make changes to the software that controls
functions in the system.
The adapter connects the typical 4 or 6-pin line cord to the 9-pin COM port on the computer.
The other end of the line cord can plug into a standard 6-pin telephone jack located on the CPU
board of the telephone system. These jacks are also referred to as COM ports. The result is a
serial data link (path) between the computer and the DXP.
To log in, open the VMMI software on your computer and select Switch / Connect to from the
main menu at the top of the screen. At the next screen, select Direct Connection / Com Port 1
(typical) / Baud Rate 9600 / Data Bits 8 / Stop Bits 1 / Parity None.
Next you have to enter the password and click on Connect.
Comdial specifically recommends Master Clear and Setting the Clock as standard procedures
you should perform on every new system.
• The Master Clear assures that only the standard default information is in the system, and it
eliminates any residual information left from the manufacturing process.
• Setting the clock is a logical event that should be done so that reports and displays in the
system will show the correct time.
