Deploying the antenna
To deploy the antenna:
1 Throw the sinker and halyard over the
structure.
1 Clip the halyard to the in-line termination, or
to the end of the antenna wire, as required.
1 Hoist the antenna wire up the structure, then
tie off the halyard to the structure.
1 Locate the balun end of the antenna at a point
where the antenna wire no longer sags, and is
oriented correctly for the frequency you want
to use and the direction in which you want to
communicate (see diagram).
1 Secure the antenna using the steel rope with
the earth stake, or wrap the rope around a
stationary object.
1 To use an earth lead:
• Plug the earth lead into the earth terminal
on the balun.
• Clip the other end of the earth lead to a
large metal object, e.g. shed, vehicle,
fence post.
1 To use a counterpoise:
• Lay out the counterpoise, forming a
cross.
• Plug the wire from the counterpoise into
the earth terminal on the balun.
Connecting the antenna to the
transceiver
To connect the antenna:
1 Switch off the transceiver.
1 Connect the coaxial cable to the
connector on the front panel.
1 Switch on the transceiver.
1 To view the SWR, press TUNE, then PTT.
If the SWR is greater than 3:1, check all
cable connections, then view the SWR again.
1 Ensure that the 50 Ohm connector is
activated ( ATU/50 or 50).
Packing up the tactical end-fed broadband antenna
To pack up the tactical end-fed broadband
antenna:
1 Switch off the transceiver.
1 Disconnect the coaxial cable from the
connector.
1 Disconnect the coaxial cable from the balun,
coil, then stow.
1 Unplug the earth lead or counterpoise from
the balun, wind up, then stow.
1 Untie the halyard and lower the antenna.
1 Unclip the halyard from the in-line
termination or antenna wire.
1 Wind the halyard onto the winding spool,
secure with velcro, then stow.
1 Hook the end of the antenna wire onto the
node on the winding spool.
1 Wind the antenna wire and steel rope onto the
winding spool by rotating the winding spool
end-over-end along the antenna wire.
1 Secure the antenna wire, balun, steel rope
and earth stake on the winding spool with
velcro, then stow.
WARNING
Do not deploy or use the antenna if
there is lightning in the area.
NOTE
Swing the sinker on
approximately 0.5 m (2 ft) of
halyard underarm, while
aiming for the structure.
WARNING
High RF voltages are present
during transmission and tuning.
Do not touch the antenna during
these activities.
WARNING
You should not transmit from your
transceiver or tune the antenna
unless people are standing beyond
the safe working distance of 0.2 m
(8 in) from the antenna.
