Requirements for deployment
antenna wire, nylon halyard, and antenna
adaptor on winding spool
earth lead with clip and plug, or counterpoise
Antenna selection
This antenna is suitable for communication over short to long distances up to 2000 km (1200 mi),
using frequencies of 1.6–30 MHz.
Deploying the tactical long wire antenna
To ensure optimal transceiver performance and
to avoid exposure to excessive electromagnetic
fields, the antenna system must be deployed
according to the instructions provided.
Preparing the antenna for deployment
To prepare the antenna:
1 Locate a suitable structure (e.g. tree) that will
hold the halyard end of the antenna
approximately 10 m (33 ft) from the ground.
Heights below this may reduce the capability
for long-distance communications.
1 Unwind the entire length of the halyard from
its winding spool neatly, followed by the
antenna wire.
Deploying the antenna
To deploy the antenna:
1 Throw the sinker and halyard over the
structure.
1 Hoist the antenna wire up the structure, then
tie off the halyard to the structure.
Connecting the antenna to the
transceiver
To connect the antenna:
1 Switch off the transceiver.
1 Unscrew the antenna adaptor from the
winding spool, then screw it onto the antenna
stud ( ) on the front panel.
1 Clip the strain loop of the antenna wire to the
clip on the antenna adaptor.
1 Plug the antenna wire into the top of the
antenna adaptor.
1 Move the transceiver to a point where the
antenna wire no longer sags, and is oriented
correctly for the frequency you want to use
and the direction in which you want to
communicate (see diagram).
1 To use an earth lead:
Plug the earth lead into the earth terminal
( ) on the front panel.
Clip the other end of the earth lead to a
large metal object, e.g. shed, vehicle,
fence post.
NOTE
Select a site that is clear of
overhead power lines and other
electrical interference.
WARNING
Do not deploy or use the antenna if
there is lightning in the area.
NOTE
Swing the sinker on
approximately 0.5 m (2 ft) of
halyard underarm, while
aiming for the structure.
WARNING
Take care not to cross the
thread on the antenna stud.
