53 Tempest®24 00 2 -Channel Wireless Intercom System
2-Wire (Party-Line) Interface
2-Wire party-line intercom systems carry one or two (depending on the system type) channels of full duplex intercom audio, plus
system power and other informa on on a single XLR-3M cable (2 wires and a ground). Each 2-Wire intercom type has a di erent
wiring scheme and unique line characteris cs. It is impera ve to have the rear panel connec ons and the front panel se ngs
adjusted correctly for audio to pass correctly between the systems.
Steps to Confi gure a 2-Wire Intercom Connec on
Adjust the Intercom Type Slide Switches to appropriate manufacturer compa ble se ng- RTS, Clear-Com, Bal.
Select 2-Wire connec on for the appropriate channels.
Make the 3-pin XLR physical connec ons to the Tempest BaseSta on and the 2-Wire system.
Null the system.
Adjust IN/OUT volume levels between the Tempest Wireless System and the 2-Wire system.
Always con rm that the 2-Wire intercom system is func oning properly before connec ng the Tempest Wireless system.
Test each wired communica on sta on before connec ng the wireless system. Con rm opera on of the wireless system
before connec ng to the wired system.
A er the slide switch is set correctly, the appropriate channels are set for 2-Wire opera on, the XLR cable connec ons are
made, and power is provided by the 2-Wire system or Master Mode, then audio will pass between Tempest and the wired
system.
Audio may develop an echo that is heard in the wireless BeltSta ons un l the system is nulled. The echo should not prevent
communica on but is undesirable. The volume levels into or out from Tempest may need adjus ng so that rela ve volumes
are the same.
Echo Cancella on Menu
In the BaseSta on’s Tech Menu is a selec on for “Echo Cancella on” (ECAN). This refers to so ware that assists in removing echo
from 2-Wire intercom connec ons. Hardware connec ons need to be op mized with the null procedure to minimize echo in the
physical link so that the so ware can remove any residual echo.
In the Tech menu, “Echo Cancella on” is “ON” by default, but is only enabled for channels that are selected for opera on with a
2-Wire intercom and have a physical connec on to a 2-Wire system. See “Nulling” Sec on of this manual.
If a 2-Wire intercom is never u lized in a system, ECAN can be turned “OFF” to ensure that it cannot create undesirable e ects.
This should not be necessary, though, and it is recommended that you keep ECAN “ON” at all  mes.
ECAN is disabled while the BaseSta on’s Auto-Null or Manual Null menu screens are ac ve, to ensure that the hardware is
op mized for echo reduc on. When ECAN is enabled, it requires up to 10 seconds of ac ve audio to achieve maximum e ciency.
Brief loud ac ve audio can help accelerate e ciency.
