Configuring the firewall to allow FileMaker
ports
When running FileMaker Server in an environment that uses a
firewall, be sure to configure the firewall to allow the ports used by
FileMaker. Restart your computer after configuring the firewall.
Windows: When FileMaker Server Admin is started when the firewall
is on, an alert is displayed. Click
Unblock to launch FileMaker Server
Admin.
Port usage and remote administration
The best method for remote administration outside the administrator’s
physical network is to keep your firewall in place and use a secure
mechanism to connect to your network, such as a virtual private
network (VPN) or secure dial-in. Use the FileMaker Server Admin
tool to administer FileMaker Server on a remote computer once you
are securely connected to your network.
Important FileMaker does not recommend using the remote
administration feature to administer FileMaker Server if you cannot
use a VPN or remote dial-in to access your network securely.
Verifying your installation
Before you configure FileMaker Server you should verify that:
1 your copy has been installed and is working correctly
1 the sample database (FMServer_Sample.fp7) is usable from a
client computer
FileMaker Server installs a pre-configured sample database as part of
a typical installation. The database FMServer_Sample.fp7 is located
in the Sample folder within the default Databases folder
(/FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/Sample/FMServer_Sample.fp7).
It is opened automatically when FileMaker
Server is launched.You
can close and remove this database after you have verified that
FileMaker
Server is functioning correctly.
To verify that FileMaker Server is functioning correctly:
1. Start FileMaker Server. Depending on the option you chose on
