Chapter 2
Migrating FileMaker Server from the previous version
If you are new to FileMaker Server, skip this chapter and proceed
directly to
chapter 3, “Installing FileMaker Server.
FileMaker Server 8 provides two tools, Back Up Settings and Restore
Settings, to help you move your preferences and schedules from a
default installation of FileMaker Server 7 to a FileMaker Server 8
installation on the same computer using the same configuration.
If you have a license for FileMaker Server 8 Advanced, there are
separate Back Up Settings and Restore Settings tools to help you save
and transfer your Web Publishing Engine settings. For more
information, see the
FileMaker Server Advanced Web Publishing
Installation Guide
.
Important If you have a license for FileMaker Server 7 Advanced and
intend to upgrade to FileMaker Server 8 Advanced, plan to do the
installations for FileMaker Server 8 and FileMaker Server 8
Advanced in the same session.

The steps listed below provide an overview of the migration process.
See the remaining sections for more information about each step.
It is important to do the migration steps in the order they are presented.
If you omit steps or don’t follow the sequence, FileMaker Server may
not work properly or you may have to reconfigure your FileMaker
Server settings manually.
1. Stop the FileMaker Server 7 service (Windows) or daemon
(Mac
OS) and FileMaker Server 7 Helper service (Windows) or
daemon (Mac
OS).
2. Make a copy of any database files, script files, and plug-ins you
used with FileMaker Server 7.
3. Save your FileMaker Server 7 settings using the Back Up Settings
tool.
4. Uninstall FileMaker Server 7.
5. Install FileMaker Server 8.
6. Move your backed up FileMaker Server 7 settings to FileMaker
Server 8 using the Restore Settings tool.
7. Move any database files, script files, and plug-ins you used with
FileMaker Server 7 to the proper folders within the FileMaker Server
8 folder structure.
8. Confirm that migration was successful.
Note If the FileMaker Server Web Publishing Engine is installed on
the same computer as FileMaker Server, run the Web Publishing
Engine migration tools.
Step 1. Stop FileMaker Server
You must first stop the FileMaker Server service (Windows) or
daemon (Mac OS) and the FileMaker Server Helper service
(Windows) or daemon (Mac OS), then quit FileMaker Server Admin.
See “Stopping FileMaker Server (Windows)” on page 46 or
“Stopping FileMaker Server (Mac OS)” on page 47.
