Setting up on a Mac OS machine
To set up your computer as a single-machine network, you can
tunnel TCP/IP through AppleTalk and set AppleTalk to use a “null”
connection that won’t connect to the outside world. Then all you
have to do is type http://localhost or the IP address
127.0.0.1 in your web browser for the Web Companion to serve
your web site without dialing up.
Note You need to have Remote Access/PPP software installed on
your machine first, which is an install option in Mac OS 8.5 and
later.
To set up your Mac OS system as a single-machine network:
1. Create a plain text file using a text editor (such as SimpleText),
name it “hosts” and save it in the root level of the Preferences folder
inside the System Folder. Type the following lines in the file:
localhost CNAME foo.bar.com
foo.bar.com A 127.0.0.1
2. Quit the FileMaker Pro and web browser applications.
3. Open the AppleTalk control panel.
4. Choose File menu > Configurations.
5. Select the Default configuration, then click Duplicate.
6. In the Duplicate Configuration dialog box, type a name for the
new configuration (for example, type Web Companion Testing)
and click OK.
7. In the Configurations dialog box, click Make Active or Done.
8. In the AppleTalk control panel, choose Remote Only from the
Connect Via pop-up menu.
If Remote Only does not appear in the menu, check to make sure the
Remote Only extension was installed by the Remote Access/PPP
installer.
9. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
10. Choose File menu > Configurations.
11. Select the Default configuration, then click Duplicate.
12. In the Duplicate Configuration dialog box, type a name for the
new configuration and click OK.
For example, type Web Companion Testing again.
13. In the Configurations dialog box, click Make Active or Done.
14. In the TCP/IP control panel, enter the following values:
1 For Connect via, choose AppleTalk (MacIP)
1 For Configure, choose Using MacIP Manually
1 For MacIP server zone, choose <Current AppleTalk Zone>
1 For IP Address, type 192.168.1.1 (which is inside the range
reserved for private networks)
15. Leave the rest of the text boxes empty.
16. Click Select Hosts File and choose the “hosts” file that you saved
in the Preferences folder (inside the System Folder). If a message
appears, click OK to select the file.
17. Close the TCP/IP control panel. If prompted to save your
settings, click Save.
18. Close the AppleTalk control panel. If prompted to save your
settings, click Save.
