Chapter 1 Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch Overview
Cards, Modules, and Panels for the Cisco SFS 3504 Chassis
AC Power-Fan Module
System cooling is provided by AC power-fan modules. The Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch supports two,
hot-swappable, redundant AC-DC power-fan modules (see Figure 1-3). Only one power-fan module is
required to power and cool the Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch (see Figure 1-8). Each AC power-fan
module contains two redundant fans. The Product ID number for the AC power-fan module is
SFS-3504-PWR-FAN.
Figure 1-8 AC Power-Fan Module
Note If only one power-fan module is used in a Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch, it can be installed in either one
of the two slots. If a power-fan module slot is vacant, a blanking panel is required in the slot to ensure
proper air flow and cooling of the system (see Figure 1-10).
Each fan is controlled independently by a thermistor internal to the module. The fan power is supplied
from the +12v power on the backplane of the module. This enables the fan to operate in the event of a
dead power supply module. This is true when there are two power supplies installed.
Blanking Panels for the Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch Chassis
This section describes the blanking panels that must be used to cover any vacant slots in the
Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch chassis. The blanking panel for the gateway module slot must be installed
to cover any gateway module slots that are vacant (see Figure 1-9). The blanking panel for the power-fan
module slot must be installed to cover the vacant slot if only a single AC power-fan module is being used
in the chassis (see Figure 1-10). The Product ID number for the blanking panel for the gateway module
slot is SFS-3504-BKGW, and the Product ID number for the blanking panel for the AC power-fan
module slot is SFS-3504-BKPF.
