4 Memory Replacement Instructions for the Network Processing Engine and Input/Output Controller
Memory Systems Overview
Table 2 I/O Controller Options for Cisco 7200 Series and Cisco uBR7200 Series
Routers
The memory systems provide the following functions:
• Main memory (DRAM in the NPE-100, NPE-150, and NPE-200; SDRAM in the NPE-175,
NPE-225 and NPE-300)—Stores the running configuration and routing tables. The Cisco IOS
software executes from main memory.
• Shared memory—Used for packet buffering by the router’s network interfaces.
• Flash memory SIMM—Stores the boot helper software. The boot helper image allows you to
boot the router when Flash memory does not contain a valid system image.
• Flash Disk(s) or Flash memory card(s)—Stores the default Cisco IOS software image.
• Erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM)—The ROM monitor, which is contained
in the boot ROM, permits you to boot the Cisco IOS image from Flash memory if a boot helper
image is not present in boot Flash memory.
• Nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM)—Stores the system configuration,
environmental monitoring logs, and the virtual configuration register.

1 The Cisco 7200 series I/O controller spares (C7200-I/O-FE-MII=, C7200-I/O-FE=, and C7200-I/O=) do not have the
Cisco uBR7200 series boot helper image loaded.

3 Only one receptacle can be used at a time.
4 The I/O controller with a single MII receptacle is no longer orderable as of May 1998.

5 If you order an I/O controller as a spare for a Cisco uBR7200 series router, use the product numbers UBR7200-I/O= (without a Fast
Ethernet port) or UBR7200-I/O-FE= (with a Fast Ethernet port). These I/O controllers have the boot helper image used by the
Cisco uBR7200 series routers loaded on the Flash memory SIMMs.
