The first panel in Figure 8-2 show the incumbent connection. The master endpoint is A and the slave
endpoint is F. Endpoints B, C, D, and E are NNI endpoints. On MGX switches, only master endpoints
can initiate grooming. After the incumbent connection is chosen for rerouting, a new connection is
established using NNI endpoints B

as shown in the second panel. When the new
connection is ready, the master endpoint sends a release message to the slave endpoint and switches to
the new connection as shown in the third panel. When the slave endpoint receives the release, it switches
to the new connection, and the reroute is complete.
