118 Implementing Cisco InfiniBand on IBM BladeCenter
7.1 Introduction to the Ethernet gateway module
The optional InfiniBand to Ethernet gateway module provides a way for InfiniBand clients to
talk to devices on an Ethernet LAN, and vise versa. This module is considered a transparent
L2 device, in that the clients do not need to be aware they are using it. Physically it offers two
inward facing 4X (10G) InfiniBand ports, and six outward facing 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports.
It can be installed in any of the expansion slots of the SFS 3012, or in the single expansion
slot of a 3001 (the 3001 is not covered here). The gateway modules and most other
components of the 3012 are hot swappable.
Figure 7-1 shows a Cisco 3012 installed with an equal number of Ethernet and Fibre Channel
gateway modules.
