Introduction
The Cisco Service and Application Module for IP (SAMI) is a high performance, Cisco IOS software
application module that occupies one slot in the Cisco 7600 series router platform.
With an IXP2800 network processor flow-distributor running at 1.4 GHz, and six PowerPCs (PPCs)
running at 1.25 GHz, each of which runs an instance of the same Cisco IOS image, the SAMI offers a
parallel architecture for Cisco software applications such as the Cisco Content Services Gateway - 2nd
Generation (CSG2), the Cisco Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), and the Cisco Mobile Wireless
Home Agent (HA).
The benefits of the Cisco SAMI architecture over the Cisco Multiprocessor WAN Application Module
(MWAM) include:
Increased processing power and session density
Reduced inter-CPU data sharing
Separation of the control and the data plane
Improved management capabilities
Easier to configure and troubleshoot
