1. Cisco Unified Border Element
To use the Cisco
®
Unified Border Element (previously known as Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway)
and H.323 Gatekeeper features on Cisco IOS
®
Software, customers must purchase feature
licenses. The Cisco Unified Border Element and H.323 Gatekeeper are primary components of a
voice-over-IP (VoIP) and video-over-IP network design that allows control, management, and
routing and helps ensure quality of service. This document describes the feature licenses available
and the router platforms and software versions to which they apply.
1.1 Cisco IOS Software Licenses
The Cisco IOS Software license is commonly referred to as Cisco IOS Software. This type of
license includes the right to use a particular Cisco IOS Software release and feature set on one
router. For example, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4(15)T3 “Enterprise Services” for the Cisco
3845 Integrated Services Router, ordered as part number S384ES-12418, corresponds to the
software image called c3845-entservicesk9-mz.124-15.T3.bin.
The Cisco Unified Border Element has different kinds of features that are broadly classified under
four categories:
A Basic voice
B Voice security
C Gatekeeper
D Lawful intercept
You need to select appropriate Cisco IOS Software depending on the features you need. Table 1
shows some examples of different Cisco IOS Software feature sets with Cisco Unified Border
Element functionalities.
