Eachdialshelfcontrollercardandfeaturecardcontainsafemale
connectorwithwhichitconnectstoamaleconnectoronthesystem
backplane.Eachmalebackplaneconnectorcomprisesasetoftiered
pins,intwolengths.Thebackplanepinssendspecificsignalstothe
systemastheymakecontactwiththecardconnectors.Thesystem
assessesthesignalsitreceivesandtheorderinwhichitreceivesthem
todeterminewhateventisoccurringandwhattaskitneedstoperform,
suchasreinitializingnewinterfacesorshuttingdownremovedones.
Eachdialshelfcontrollercardandfeaturecardisdesignedwithtwo
ejectorleverstobeusedwhenyouinstallorremoveacard(see).The
functionoftheejectorleversistoalignandsecurelyseatthecard
connectorsinthebackplane.
Caution
Donotforcethedialshelfcontrollercardsorfeaturecardsintoaslot,asthis
candamagethebackplaneconnectorpinsiftheyarenotaligned
properlywiththecardconnectors.
NoteToavoiderroneousfailuremessages,youmustallowatleast
15secondsforthesystemtoreinitializeandnotecurrentinterface
configurationsbeforeyouremoveorinsertadialshelfcontrollercard
orfeaturecardinthedialshelf.
SafetyGuidelines
ThissectionprovidessafetyandESDpreventionguidelinestohelp
youavoidinjurytoyourselfandavoiddamagetotheequipment.The
followingsafetyguidelinesarerecommendedwhenworkingwithany
equipmentthatconnectstoelectricalpowerortelephonewiring:
• Locatetheemergencypoweroffswitchfortheroominwhichyou
areworkingbeforebeginninganyproceduresrequiringaccessto
thechassisinterior.
• Neverworkalonewhenpotentiallyhazardousconditionsexist.
• Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit;
alwayscheck.
• Neverperformanyactionthatcreatesapotentialhazardtopeople
ormakestheequipmentunsafe.
• Carefullyexamineyourworkareaforpossiblehazardssuchas
moistfloors,ungroundedpowerextensioncables,andmissing
safetygrounds.

accordancewitharticles11016,11017,and11018ofthe
NationalElectricCode,ANSI/NFPA70.
TelephoneWiringGuidelines
Thefollowingguidelinesarerecommendedwhenworkingwithany
equipmentthatisconnectedtotelephonewiringortoothernetwork
cabling:
• Neverinstalltelephonewiringduringalightningstorm.
• Neverinstalltelephonejacksinwetlocationsunlessthejackis
specificallydesignedforwetlocations.
• Nevertouchuninsulatedtelephonewiresorterminalsunlessthe
telephonelinehasbeendisconnectedatthenetworkinterface.
• Alwaysusecautionwheninstallingormodifyingtelephonelines.
PreventingElectrostaticDischargeDamage
Electrostaticdischarge(ESD)damagesequipmentandimpairs
electricalcircuitry.ESDoccurswhenprintedcircuitcardsare
improperlyhandledandresultsincompleteorintermittentfailures.
Thesystemfeaturecardsanddialshelfcontrollercardsconsistofa
printedcircuitboardthatisfixedinametalcarrier.Electromagnetic
interference(EMI)shielding,connectors,andejectorleversareintegral
componentsofthecarrier.Handlethecardsbytheircarrieredgesor
ejectorleversonly;nevertouchtheprintedcircuitry,cardcomponents,
orconnectorpins.
Althoughthemetalcarrierhelpstoprotecttheprintedcircuitryfrom
ESD,youshouldwearapreventiveantistaticstrapwheneverhandling
featurecardsordialshelfcontrollercards.Ensurethatthestrapmakes
