If you configure the interface speed an d duplex commands manua lly and enter a value other than
speed auto (for example, 10 or 100 Mbps), mak e sure tha t you conf igure th e connecting interfac e speed
command to a matching speed but do n ot use the auto p arameter.
When manually configuri ng the inter face spee d to either 1 0 or 100 Mbps, the swit ch prompts you to also
configure duplex mode on the interfac e.
Note Catalyst 4506 switches c annot automa tically n egotiate t he interfa ce speed a nd the duplex mod e if eithe r
connecting interface is configured to a value other than auto.
Caution Changing the interface speed and the duplex mode conf iguration might shu t down and reenable the
interface during the reconfiguration.
Table 2-36 describes the system’s perform ance for different combina tions of the duplex and spe ed
modes. The specified duplex command that is configured with the specified speed command produces
the resulting system action.
Examples This example shows how to set the interface speed to 100 Mbps on the Fast Ethernet interface 5/4:
Switch(config)# interface fastethernet 5/4
Switch(config-if)# speed 100
