Chapter 1 Overview
Functional Overview
Cisco 7140 series routers have three levels of cache: a primary and a secondary cache that are
internal to the microprocessor and a tertiary, 2-MB (fixed) external cache that provides
additional high-speed storage for data and instructions.
Four environmental sensorsMonitor the cooling air as it leaves the chassis.
Boot ROMStores sufficient code for booting the Cisco IOS software.
Flash memory single in-line memory module (SIMM)Stores the boot image used to boot the
router.
NVRAMStores the system configuration and environmental monitoring logs (the NVRAM uses
lithium batteries to maintain its contents when disconnected from power).
Console portProvides access for a local terminal and is equipped with an RJ-45 receptacle.
Auxiliary portProvides access for a modem for remote access and is equipped with an RJ-45
receptacle.
Two fixed LAN portsProvide 10BaseT/100BaseTX autosensing Ethernet/Fast Ethernet (full and
half duplex) and are equipped with an RJ-45 receptacle.
Two PC Card slotsContain Flash Disks or Flash memory cards that provide the default Cisco IOS
software image.
