External Connections
Following are the external connection requirements for Catalyst 2820.
• This 9-pin, male, management port functions as a DTE port. This port enables attachment of a
terminal or terminal emulator that is used to customize the switch's configuration, monitor switch
activity and status, and test the switch. Console access can be either local, by direct attachment
to the EIA/TIA-232 port, or remote, through a modem connection. The EIA/TIA-232 port
automatically detects the baud rate of the terminal to which it is attached.
• 25 switched Ethernet ports: 24 10BaseT using RJ-45 connections and one AUI using a DB-15
connection.
The Ethernet 10BaseT ports can connect to single workstations, 10BaseT hubs, or any 10BaseT
compatible device. The attached devices use standard 10BaseT adapters and wiring. Port 25,
located on the back panel, supports an alternative Ethernet AUI connection for attachment to a
thick coaxial, thin coaxial, or a fiber optic media transceiver.
• 10 Mbps ports:
— RJ-45 Connectors
— Two-pair Category 3, 4, or 5 UTP cabling
— DB15 connector on AUI port
• 100BaseTX ports:
— RJ-45 connectors
— Two-pair Category 5 UTP cabling
