External Connections
This section contains the external connection requirements for the Cisco 7204 and Cisco 7206
routers.
• Input/Output Controller (I/O controller)
— The I/O controller has two EIA/TIA-232 ports: a DCE-mode console port and a DTE-mode
auxiliary port. The console port is a DCE DB-25 receptacle for connecting a data terminal,
which you will use to configure the interfaces and bring up the router.
— The auxiliary port is a DTE DB-25 plug for connecting a modem or other DCE device (such
as a CSU/DSU or other router) to the router. A standard EIA/TIA-232 cable can be used for
the auxiliary and console ports.
— The MII connector supports IEEE 802.3u interfaces compliant with the 100BaseX and
100BaseT standards. The single MII connection requires an external transceiver that permits
connection to multimode fiber for 100BASE-FX or 100BaseT4 physical media.
• Port adapters
The Cisco 7204 and the Cisco 7206 routers use port adapters that provide the following electrical
interfaces:
— Synchronous serial using EIA/TIA-232, EIA/TIA-449, V.35, and X.21 DTE and DCE
cables, and EIA-530 DTE cables only
— IEEE 802.5 Token Ring using RJ-45 connections
— IEEE 802.3 Ethernet 10BaseT using RJ-45 connections
— IEEE 802.3 Ethernet 10BaseFL using ST-type multimode, optical fiber connections
— IEEE 802.3u Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX using MII and RJ-45 or MII and
SC-type optical fiber connections
— Single-mode and multimode FDDI using MIC and SC-type optical fiber connections
