Introduction to Mobility in IP
The advent of wireless technologies such IEEE 802.11b has presented a tremendous opportunity to those
who rely on networking resources. Devices such as laptops or handheld computers are no longer
restricted to access provided by Ethernet wiring or telephone lines. As the reach of wireless coverage
expands beyond the campus to metropolitan, national, and global levels, maintaining connectivity with
a clients parent, or home network becomes more viable and expected.
Various approaches exist to providing network access to devices or nodes that have roamed away from
their home network and onto a foreign network as shown in Figure 6-1. In some cases, the foreign
network may be owned or administrated by a different entity such as a police or fire department. In other
cases, the foreign network may simply be another Layer 3 subnet at a remote facility of a large enterprise
or university campus.
