About the OSC
As described in the “OSC Modules” section on page 1-5, the Cisco ONS 15530 dedicates a separate
channel (channel 0) for the OSC (optical supervisory channel), which is used for network control and
management information between Cisco ONS 15530 systems on the network. The OSC is carried on the
same fiber as the data channels (channels 1 through 32), but it carries no client data traffic.
Figure 9-1 shows the path of the OSC in a protected ring configuration. The OSC signal is generated by
a laser on an OSC card and is sent in both directions from the node; both receive signals are monitored
to maintain communication with the neighboring nodes. The OSC signal terminates at each node.
